Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) April 17, 2013

The City Club of Cleveland is pleased to announce the appointment of Dan Moulthrop to the position of chief executive officer. Moulthrop will succeed Jim Foster, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Foster had led the organization since 1993. The announcement was made by City Club of Cleveland board president Hewitt Shaw.

Dan is the right person to lead the City Club into our next 100 years, said Shaw, managing partner of BakerHostetlers Cleveland office. Hes an accomplished journalist and an effective communicator who has the ability to bring in national speakers and weave the conversation into our communities. Were excited by the energy he will bring to one of Clevelands most treasured institutions.

Moulthrop was first introduced to the Greater Cleveland community in 2005 when he joined ideastream as the local host of Morning Edition. In 2006, he became the founding host of The Sound of Ideas, ideastreams award-winning public affairs program. In 2010, he helped to create The Civic Commons, a nationally recognized project to create a social media environment designed explicitly for productive, civil dialogue.

The City Club has always been the place where national and international conversations get localized while local conversations get put into a broader context, said Moulthrop. Jim Foster did a great job of expanding The City Clubs reach through the internet and other advancements in digital technology. I look forward to pursuing additional ways for The City Club to enhance engagement with the community and promotion of free speech and public dialogue.

Earlier this year, the board retained search firm Ratliff & Taylor to conduct a broad national search and vet potential candidates.

Dan gets it, said Barbara Danforth, a City Club board member, leader of the search committee and senior vice president at Ratliff and Taylor. He has worked with the City Club on countless programs, understands its mission and has a vision for the organization that aligns with the City Clubs strategic plan, Danforth continued. This is a great moment for the institution.

In addition to his roles at ideastream and The Civic Commons, Moulthrop is co-author, with Dave Eggers and Ninive Calegari, of the bestselling book Teachers Have it Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of Americas Teachers. The book provided the basis for the 2011 documentary American Teacher and foreshadowed much of the current debate over accountability, compensation and reform in public education. Moulthrop holds a BA in English and a Masters of Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Shaker Heights with his wife, Dorothy Russo Moulthrop, and their three children.

Were very excited about the talents, creative thinking and enthusiasm Dan brings to the table, said board member Paul Harris, who co-chaired the search committee. The committee was impressed by his history of innovation along with his entrepreneurial spirit.
